Sit, awhile – you have earned your rest, travelers. You’ve been walking for some time now and it has brought you here: here by the fireside, by the water, between these margins. I’m glad it has. We have much to discuss, you and I.
My name is Alexander Gast. Much like my fellow consumers and producers of literature, I believe that stories make up the very fabric of our reality. There is no greater joy than crafting stories, no greater honor. And truly, what better source of stories is there than travel? Rather than waiting for stories to fall onto our tongues, the best of us plunge into the too-big world to find them ourselves. This, at The Fool’s World, is the lightning we aim to capture.
Robert Louis Stevenson, in Travels with a Donkey in the Cévennes, wrote: “I travel for travel’s sake. The great affair is to move.” Let’s move, then – together, arm in arm. It would be a delight to move with you, towards whatever horizon you’ve set your sights on.
It is worth noting that, here at The Fool’s World, we recognize “travel” as a spectrum. This spectrum houses the Stevenson sense of world-romping, of course, but also includes more minute definitions of the word. A trip to the corner store for a six pack and bubblegum, for instance, falls on this spectrum; we are interested in travel of every sort, of every magnitude. No venture is too small.
The Fool’s World, a project of Raleigh Review, will begin accepting its inaugural submissions on Friday, November 1st, 2024. I’m looking forward to reading them. I’m looking forward to living them. Most importantly, I’m looking forward – we all are, here at The Fool’s World. Come along, if you please.
